SC has developed an integrated spell checker for minority languages. The system works with a “best-guess” rule, based on statistical algorithms, but also includes models of errors of “dialectal” origin, a fundamental issue for minority languages.
In fact, each correction system sets its assumptions on the similarities of words. The SC system adds to this method the awareness that, for non-standardised or recently standardised languages, the majority of speakers are in fact illiterate in their own language and therefore most errors are often caused by knowledge of the local variant alone, which differs from the standard form.
SC spell checker facilitates the entry of lesser-used languages into the written world and technology by raising awareness of the use of correct spelling.
